Cağaloğlu Hamamı is one of Istanbul's most historic and beautiful Turkish baths, a grand 18th-century hammam near the Hagia Sophia, where bathers have come to steam, scrub, and soak beneath a marble dome pierced with star-shaped skylights for nearly 300 years. The classic experience: relax in the warm marble steam room, then receive a vigorous exfoliating scrub (kese) and foam wash from an attendant on the heated central marble platform (göbektaşı), before cooling down and resting with tea.

It's a working hammam that has served sultans and, more recently, a long list of celebrities, and it leans into its grandeur (and tourist popularity), so it's pricier than a neighbourhood bath, but the building and the ritual are spectacular. Separate men's and women's sections preserve the traditional experience. Book a treatment package and allow time to linger.

Know before you go

  • It's a premium, tourist-popular hammam, pricier than local baths, but the building is extraordinary.
  • Choose a treatment package (scrub/foam/massage) when booking rather than self-service for the full experience.
  • Men's and women's sections are separate, in the traditional way.
  • It's right by Hagia Sophia, easy to combine with Sultanahmet sightseeing.

A bit of history

Built in 1741 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I to fund his library in Hagia Sophia, Cağaloğlu Hamamı is one of the last great hammams constructed in the Ottoman classical style. It has operated continuously since, becoming one of the city's most famous baths.

Common questions

What happens at a Turkish bath?

You relax in a warm marble steam room, then an attendant gives a vigorous exfoliating scrub and a foam wash on the heated central platform, followed by cooling down and resting with tea.

Is it expensive?

It's at the premium end, a historic, tourist-famous hammam costs more than a neighbourhood bath, but the 18th-century building and full ritual justify it for many.

Are men and women together?

No, like traditional hammams, it has separate men's and women's sections.

How long does it take?

About an hour to 90 minutes for a full scrub-and-massage package; allow extra to relax afterward.
