The Basilica Cistern, built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, is one of Istanbul's most atmospheric sights. Visitors walk along raised platforms above shallow water, surrounded by a forest of columns reflected in the dimly lit pool. The cistern's eerie ambiance is heightened by the two Medusa heads used as column bases, one placed sideways, the other upside down. Originally supplying water to the Great Palace, this subterranean marvel now hosts occasional concerts and art installations, blending history with modern culture.
Don't miss
- Marvel at the two Medusa head carvings, one placed sideways and the other upside down, whose origins remain a mystery
- Walk the raised pathways and observe the reflection of 336 marble columns in the shallow water
- Look for the 'Hen's Eye' column, carved with teardrop patterns and a hole said to grant wishes
