The Valley of the Tombs is the main burial ground of ancient Palmyra, stretching west of the city. Here, visitors can see towering, multi-story funerary monuments that once held sarcophagi of wealthy Palmyrene families, as well as underground hypogea with intricate carvings. The towers, some rising up to 20 meters, are unique to Palmyra and offer a glimpse into the city's blend of Eastern and Roman funerary traditions. Walking among these silent structures, you'll appreciate the craftsmanship and the desert setting that has preserved them for centuries.
Don't miss
- Tower of Elahbel: a four-story tomb with well-preserved interior chambers and burial niches
- Underground hypogeum of the Three Brothers: decorated with frescoes and family portraits
- Panoramic view of the necropolis from the hilltop, especially at sunset
