Peraliya is a serene coastal village that gained international recognition after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, when a passenger train was swept off the tracks here, resulting in massive loss of life. Today, the site is marked by a memorial monument and a preserved train carriage, serving as a poignant reminder of the disaster. The beach itself is peaceful and less crowded than Hikkaduwa's main strip, offering a place for quiet reflection. Visitors can pay respects at the memorial, walk along the sand, and observe the daily life of local fishing families.
