The Old Main Synagogue of Segovia, now the Corpus Christi Convent, is a powerful testament to the city's medieval Jewish heritage. Built in the 13th century as the principal synagogue of the Jewish quarter, it was converted into a church after the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and later became a convent. The building's exterior is unassuming, blending into the narrow streets, but the interior reveals a stunning Mudéjar ceiling of carved and painted wood, along with horseshoe arches and decorative plasterwork that reflect Islamic artistic influence. The space is now divided into a church and convent areas, with the original synagogue layout still discernible. Visitors can sense the layers of history, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic, all within one structure. The convent is still active, so parts may be off-limits, but the main hall is open and offers a profound glimpse into Segovia's multicultural past.
