Ljubljana's Old Town is one of Europe's most charming and underrated city centres, a car-free tangle of pastel baroque facades, café-lined riverbanks, and the distinctive bridges of architect Jože Plečnik, all watched over by a hilltop castle. The Ljubljanica River threads through the heart of it, crossed by the Triple Bridge and the dragon-topped Dragon Bridge (the dragon is the city's emblem). It's small, walkable, and relaxed, with a buzzing café and market culture spilling onto the embankments.
Climb (or take the funicular) up to Ljubljana Castle for the view over the red rooftops to the Alps, browse the riverside market, and simply linger, this is a city made for slow wandering and waterside coffee. Compact enough to see in a day, lovely enough to stay longer.

A bit of history

In the early 20th century the architect Jože Plečnik reshaped the city with his distinctive bridges, embankments, and squares, work now recognised by UNESCO, giving the Old Town its singular look.
