The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a subterranean complex carved from soft limestone around 4000 BCE, originally used as a sanctuary and burial site. Visitors descend through three levels of chambers, including the remarkable 'Holy of Holies' with red ochre paintings. The site's unique acoustics and preserved skeletal remains provide profound insight into ancient rituals. Access is strictly limited to 80 visitors per day to protect the fragile environment, making advance booking essential.
