The Basilica Palladiana is the centerpiece of Vicenza's main square, Piazza dei Signori. Despite its name, it was never a church; it was originally the Palazzo della Ragione (town hall). Palladio transformed the existing Gothic building by adding a double loggia of white marble, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. The building's most distinctive feature is the high, ship-like roof (known as the 'keel roof') that dominates the skyline. Today, the Basilica hosts art exhibitions, cultural events, and a café on the upper loggia with panoramic views of the square. Visitors can admire the elegant arches, the stone balustrades, and the intricate carvings that exemplify Palladio's genius.

Don't miss

  • The double loggia with Palladio's signature serliana arches
  • The vast Sala della Basilica, used for exhibitions
  • The view from the upper loggia overlooking Piazza dei Signori
  • The clock tower (Torre di Piazza) adjacent to the Basilica
