San Fermo Maggiore is a remarkable church in Verona that showcases a unique fusion of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, the church actually consists of two superimposed structures: a lower Romanesque church (San Fermo Minore) and an upper Gothic church (San Fermo Maggiore). The lower church, with its low vaults and ancient frescoes, feels like a crypt, while the upper church is airy and bright, featuring a stunning wooden ceiling shaped like the hull of a ship, painted with saints and biblical scenes. The façade is simple but elegant, with a rose window and a portal adorned with sculptures. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes by artists such as Turone and the Martino family, as well as a beautiful altarpiece by Giambettino Cignaroli. The church also houses the tombs of notable Veronese families. San Fermo Maggiore is less visited than Verona's main attractions, offering a peaceful and contemplative experience.
