The Lupanar (from Latin 'lupa' meaning prostitute) is Pompeii's most notorious brothel, located near the Forum and the Stabian Baths. This two-story building contains five small rooms on the ground floor, each with a stone bed (masonry couch) covered by a thin mattress, and a latrine in the corridor. The walls are adorned with explicit frescoes depicting sexual acts, which likely served as a menu or advertisement for services. The graffiti carved into the walls records the names of prostitutes and their clients, providing a rare glimpse into the social dynamics of ancient sex work. Visiting the Lupanar is a stark reminder of the realities of Roman urban life, where prostitution was legal and widespread. The cramped, dimly lit rooms contrast sharply with the opulence of nearby villas, highlighting the city's social stratification.
