The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is a remarkably preserved structure that predates the Colosseum in Rome by nearly a century. Built into the ground, it could seat up to 20,000 spectators, the entire population of Pompeii. Unlike later amphitheaters, it lacks a hypogeum (underground stage), so the arena floor is open. The elliptical shape and tiered seating create excellent acoustics, and the site now hosts occasional concerts and events. Visitors can walk through the tunnels (vomitoria) and onto the arena floor, imagining the roar of the crowd during gladiator contests. The amphitheater is located at the eastern edge of the archaeological site, near the Porta Sarno entrance.

Don't miss

  • Walk onto the arena floor and imagine the gladiator battles.
  • Climb to the top tiers for panoramic views of Pompeii and Vesuvius.
  • See the graffiti and inscriptions on the walls, including election notices and gladiator advertisements.
  • Visit the nearby Palaestra, a large gymnasium with a swimming pool.
