The House of the Vettii is one of Pompeii's most opulent and best-preserved private residences, belonging to two wealthy freedmen brothers, Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus. Located on Via di Mercurio, the house is renowned for its stunning frescoes, particularly the famous Priapus fresco in the entrance and the erotic scenes in the cubiculum (bedroom). Visitors walk through a grand atrium with marble impluvium, a peristyle garden adorned with statues and fountains, and richly decorated rooms featuring mythological paintings. The house's layout and decoration reflect the social aspirations of its owners, who used art to display their wealth and sophistication. The vivid colors and detailed scenes, including cupids engaged in various trades, make it a must-see for understanding Roman domestic life and aesthetics.
