The Orto Botanico di Pisa, established in 1544, is the oldest university botanical garden in the world. Located near the Piazza dei Miracoli, it offers a peaceful retreat from the tourist crowds. The garden is divided into several sections, including a medicinal plant garden, a greenhouse with tropical species, and a collection of aquatic plants. The historic arboretum features ancient trees, such as a ginkgo biloba planted in the 18th century. Visitors can also see the 16th-century botanical institute building, which houses a herbarium and library. The garden is a living laboratory for the University of Pisa, but also a delightful spot for leisurely strolls among labeled plants from around the globe.
