The Camposanto Monumentale, or monumental cemetery, is a striking marble-clad cloister that forms the northern edge of Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli. Its name, meaning 'holy field,' refers to soil brought from Golgotha during the Crusades. Inside, you'll find a vast collection of Roman sarcophagi, which inspired Pisa's medieval sculptors, and the remains of fresco cycles that once covered the walls, including the famous 'Triumph of Death.' The building was heavily damaged by a fire in 1944, but restored frescoes and original artworks are displayed in a museum-like setting. Visitors walk along the long, open arcade, surrounded by ancient tombs and funerary monuments, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere distinct from the bustling square outside.

Don't miss

  • The 'Triumph of Death' fresco (restored sections)
  • Roman sarcophagi lining the cloister walls
  • The original 14th-century frescoes in the museum wing
  • The view of the Leaning Tower through the arcade
