Cittadella Nuova, also known as the Fortress of San Gallo, is a massive brick bastion built by the Medici in the 16th century to defend Pisa and control the Arno. Today, its ramparts and grassy interiors form a popular public park where locals stroll, jog, and picnic. The fortress's pentagonal layout and thick walls are a textbook example of Renaissance military architecture. Visitors can walk along the top of the walls for panoramic views of the river and the city's historic center. Inside the fortress, the former arsenal buildings now host cultural events and exhibitions. What makes this site distinctive is the juxtaposition of military might with modern leisure: children play where cannons once stood, and the only battles now are over the best picnic spot. The fortress also provides a serene escape from the tourist bustle, with benches under shade trees and a quiet atmosphere.
