Castel dell'Ovo, or Egg Castle, is the oldest standing fortification in Naples, perched on the small island of Megaride. Its name derives from a medieval legend involving the Roman poet Virgil and a magical egg that supposedly supports the castle's foundations. Visitors can explore the ramparts and towers, which provide sweeping views of the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the city skyline. The castle's seaside location makes it a popular spot for sunset walks along the adjacent Borgo Marinari harbor, lined with restaurants and fishing boats. Inside, the castle hosts temporary art exhibitions and cultural events. Its simple, medieval architecture contrasts with the vibrant waterfront, offering a quiet escape from the city's bustle. The climb to the top rewards with some of the best photo opportunities in Naples.
