The Royal Palace of Portici is a grand 18th-century residence built for King Charles III of Bourbon, located in the town of Portici just south of Naples. The palace served as a summer retreat for the royal family and is surrounded by extensive gardens that slope down toward the sea. Today, the palace houses the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Naples Federico II, but parts are open to the public. Visitors can explore the ornate royal apartments, decorated with frescoes and period furnishings, and stroll through the terraced park, which offers panoramic views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The palace also hosts the Herculaneum Archaeological Museum, displaying artifacts from the nearby ancient city buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD. The combination of royal history, archaeology, and scenic beauty makes it a rewarding excursion.
