Castel dell'Ovo, or 'Egg Castle,' is Naples' oldest standing fortification, perched on the small island of Megaride. Its name comes from a legend that the poet Virgil hid a magical egg in the foundations, if it breaks, the castle will fall. Today, visitors can explore its ramparts, towers, and courtyards for free. The castle offers sweeping views of the Naples waterfront, Mount Vesuvius, and the Sorrentine Peninsula. Inside, there are occasional art exhibitions and a small museum. It's a popular spot for sunset walks and photography, with a relaxed, romantic atmosphere.
