The Varaha Cave Temple is one of Mahabalipuram's finest examples of Pallava rock-cut architecture. Carved into a granite hill, the small mandapa houses a stunning bas-relief of Varaha lifting Bhudevi (earth goddess) from the cosmic ocean. The panel is flanked by other divine figures and attendants, all carved with remarkable detail. Visitors can explore the simple yet elegant interior, noting the graceful pillars and the serene atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling temple town. This site offers a glimpse into the religious iconography and artistic mastery of 7th-century South India.

Don't miss

  • The central Varaha panel with intricate detailing of the boar's musculature and the goddess's posture
  • The four carved pillars with seated lion bases, typical of Pallava style
  • The smaller side panels depicting Brahma and Shiva with their consorts
