The Pancha Rathas are a set of five monolithic temples, each hewn from a single large granite boulder, dating back to the 7th century. They are named after the five Pandava brothers and Draupadi from the Mahabharata, though they are not actually chariots. Each ratha exhibits a distinct architectural style, from simple to elaborate, with intricate carvings of deities, animals, and geometric patterns. Visitors can walk around and inside these structures, marveling at the skill of the Pallava sculptors. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts.

Don't miss

  • Notice the realistic elephant and lion sculptures flanking the entrance of the Bhima Ratha.
  • Compare the different roof styles, from the barrel-vaulted Draupadi Ratha to the pyramidal Arjuna Ratha.
