The Mahishasuramardini Mandapa is a splendid rock-cut cave temple in Mahabalipuram, celebrated for its large and dynamic panel depicting the goddess Durga as Mahishasuramardini, the slayer of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The panel is carved with remarkable detail, showing Durga riding her lion and attacking the demon, surrounded by a host of celestial beings. The cave also contains other reliefs, including Vishnu asleep on the serpent Ananta and a scene of the goddess Lakshmi. This mandapa exemplifies the high point of Pallava sculptural achievement and is a key attraction for visitors exploring the town's ancient rock-cut heritage.
