Krishna Mandapam is a rock-cut cave temple renowned for its expansive bas-relief depicting Krishna lifting Mount Govardhana. The scene shows Krishna holding the mountain aloft with one hand while villagers and cattle take shelter beneath, a story from Hindu mythology. The carving covers an entire wall, with detailed figures of men, women, cows, and even a cat, all rendered with lively expressions. The mandapa itself is open-fronted with carved pillars. This site is less crowded than others, allowing visitors to appreciate the narrative artistry at leisure.

Don't miss

  • The massive Govardhana scene with over 50 carved figures including Krishna, villagers, and animals
  • The naturalistic depiction of cattle and a cat among the crowd
  • The carved pillars with lotus motifs and mythical creatures
