Marktplatz, or Market Square, has been the social and commercial heart of Heidelberg since the Middle Ages. Flanked by the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Town Hall (Rathaus), the square is a lively gathering place where locals and tourists meet. The centerpiece is the Hercules Fountain (Herkulesbrunnen), built in 1703, depicting the mythological hero wrestling the Nemean lion. The square is surrounded by colorful baroque buildings housing cafes, restaurants, and shops. On certain days, a farmers' market sets up stalls selling fresh produce, flowers, and local specialties. The square's open, sunny aspect makes it ideal for people-watching while enjoying a coffee or a glass of local wine. Seasonal events like the Christmas market and summer concerts take place here, adding to its vibrant atmosphere.
