Heidelberg Castle is one of Germany's most iconic ruins, perched on the Königstuhl hillside overlooking the Old Town. Visitors can explore the sprawling complex of red sandstone structures, including the Friedrich Wing, the Great Terrace, and the famous castle courtyard. The castle offers breathtaking views of the Neckar River, the Old Bridge, and the rooftops of Heidelberg. Inside, you'll find the German Pharmacy Museum and the massive Great Heidelberg Tun, a 220,000-liter wine barrel. The castle's blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, combined with its romantic ruin aesthetic, makes it a must-see. The walk up from the Old Town is steep but rewarding, or you can take the funicular railway for an easier ascent.

Don't miss

  • Panoramic views from the Great Terrace over Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley
  • The Great Heidelberg Tun – an enormous wine barrel with a dance floor on top
  • German Pharmacy Museum housed in the castle's former outbuildings
  • The Friedrich Wing with its ornate Renaissance façade and statues of electors
  • The castle gardens (Hortus Palatinus) with terraced landscaping
