The Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) stands at the heart of Heidelberg's Marktplatz, its towering spire a defining feature of the Old Town skyline. Built between 1398 and 1515, this late Gothic hall church has a striking red sandstone exterior and a simple, airy interior. Historically, it served as the burial place for Electors of the Palatinate and housed the famous Bibliotheca Palatina in its gallery until the 17th century. Today, visitors can climb the 208 steps of the tower for panoramic views over the Old Town, the Neckar River, and the castle. The interior features a modern altar and stained glass, with remnants of medieval frescoes. The church is still active, hosting regular services and concerts. Its location on the bustling market square makes it a natural stop during any Old Town exploration.
