Freiburg's Town Hall is not a single building but a complex of historic structures that have served as the seat of local government for centuries. The most recognizable part is the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) with its striking red-and-gold Renaissance facade, adorned with statues and a glockenspiel (carillon) that chimes daily. The building dates from the 16th century, though parts are older. Adjacent is the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), a 19th-century addition that blends seamlessly. Visitors can stroll through the courtyard, admire the ornate architecture, and listen to the carillon's melodies. The town hall remains an active administrative center, so while some areas are off-limits, the public can access certain rooms during events or by appointment.
Don't miss
- Watch the carillon performance at 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM daily.
- Admire the Renaissance facade with its colorful paintings and statues of emperors and city patrons.
- Explore the inner courtyard, which features a fountain and historical plaques.
- Look for the 'Freiburg Mile' marker in front of the building, a brass line showing the city's historical boundaries.
