Freiburg Minster, also known as Freiburger Münster, dominates the city skyline with its 116-meter spire, often called the 'most beautiful tower in Christendom.' Built from red sandstone, the cathedral is a prime example of Gothic architecture, though construction began in the Romanesque style in the 13th century. Inside, visitors are greeted by soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate stone carvings, and a series of magnificent stained glass windows, some dating back to the Middle Ages. The choir stalls feature elaborate woodwork, and the high altar is a masterpiece of Renaissance art. Climbing the 329 steps to the tower platform rewards you with panoramic views over Freiburg and the Black Forest. The cathedral survived World War II bombings largely intact, making it a rare preserved medieval structure in the city.
