Freiburg's Old City (Altstadt) is a beautifully preserved medieval quarter that invites exploration on foot. Its narrow cobblestone lanes are lined with colorful houses, many rebuilt after World War II in traditional style. The most distinctive feature is the Bächle, small, open water channels that run along the streets, originally used for firefighting and livestock watering. Today, they add a charming babbling soundtrack and are a beloved symbol of the city. Legend says that if you accidentally step into a Bächle, you'll marry a Freiburger. The Old City is also home to historic gates like the Schwabentor and Martinstor, as well as the Augustinerplatz with its beer gardens. The area is pedestrian-friendly, with shops, cafés, and restaurants tucked into arcaded walkways. Don't miss the historic Kaufhaus and the many ornate fountains, such as the Georgsbrunnen.
