Place du Vieux Marché is the heart of Rouen's old market district and one of the city's most historically charged sites. It was here on May 30, 1431, that Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Today, the square is a vibrant public space surrounded by half-timbered buildings and outdoor cafés, where locals and visitors gather to enjoy the atmosphere. At its center stands the Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, a modern church built in 1979 with a dramatic roof shaped like an overturned hull and stunning 16th-century stained-glass windows salvaged from a former church. A simple cross and a small garden mark the exact spot of the execution. The square also hosts a lively market on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, offering fresh produce, cheese, and flowers. Visitors can wander the cobblestones, sip coffee at a terrace, and reflect on the layered history of this place, from medieval martyrdom to contemporary urban life.
