The Aître Saint-Maclou is one of the few surviving medieval ossuaries in Europe, built in the 14th century to cope with the mass burials required during the Black Death. Located near the Church of Saint-Maclou, this half-timbered courtyard is encircled by galleries carved with grim symbols of mortality: skulls, crossbones, coffins, and shovels. The macabre decorations were intended as a memento mori, reminding visitors of the fragility of life. Today, the site serves as a cultural space hosting art exhibitions, concerts, and workshops. Visitors can walk through the peaceful courtyard, admire the intricate wood carvings, and visit the small museum that explains the history of the ossuary and medieval burial practices. The atmosphere is both haunting and serene, offering a unique glimpse into how medieval communities confronted death.
