Porte d'Aval is the larger of the two famous sea arches at Étretat, located on the western side of the cliffs. This natural arch, carved by wave action, frames the open sea and the distinctive needle-shaped rock called L'Aiguille. The arch is best viewed from the clifftop path that leads west from the town, offering a classic photo opportunity. At low tide, visitors can walk on the pebble beach beneath the arch, but caution is needed as the tide can come in quickly. The arch is part of a larger cliff formation that includes a cave and a small beach. The experience of standing under the arch, with the sound of the sea echoing off the chalk walls, is unforgettable. The area around Porte d'Aval is also popular for rock climbing, with routes on the chalk faces.

  • Photograph L'Aiguille, the needle rock visible through the arch.
  • Explore the small cave near the arch (accessible at low tide).
  • Watch the waves crash through the arch during high tide.
