Île Saint-Honorat is the smaller of the two Lérins Islands, located just a 15-minute ferry ride from Cannes. The island is dominated by the Lérins Abbey, a working monastery inhabited by Cistercian monks who have lived here since the 5th century (with interruptions). Visitors can explore the abbey church, cloister, and the medieval fortified monastery that once protected the monks from pirate raids. The island's interior is a tranquil landscape of pine forests, vineyards, and olive groves, crisscrossed by walking paths. The monks cultivate grapes and produce wine and liqueurs, which are sold in the island's shop. The atmosphere is one of serene contemplation, with signs asking visitors to respect the silence. The island also features several small chapels scattered along the coast, including the Chapel of Saint-Sauveur. The clear waters around the island are popular for snorkeling. A visit offers a unique blend of spiritual heritage, nature, and monastic craftsmanship.
