Fort Royal is a 17th-century fortress located on Île Sainte-Marguerite, the largest of the Lérins Islands just off the coast of Cannes. The fortress is best known as the prison of the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask, whose identity remains a historical enigma. Visitors can explore the cell where he was held, along with the rest of the fortifications that offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the Cannes coastline. Within the fortress, the Musée de la Mer showcases underwater archaeology finds, including Roman shipwreck artifacts, as well as exhibits on the island's maritime history. The journey to the island itself is a pleasant 15-minute ferry ride from Cannes, and the island features beautiful walking trails and secluded beaches. Fort Royal is a must-visit for history buffs and anyone intrigued by the legend of the Iron Mask.
