Place Foch, also known as Place du Maréchal Foch, is the central square of Ajaccio and the city's social heart. Overlooking the port, this palm-lined plaza is dominated by a striking white marble statue of Napoleon Bonaparte as a Roman emperor, erected in the 19th century. The square is flanked by elegant 19th-century buildings housing cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, with their terraces spilling onto the pavement. Visitors can sit with a coffee and watch the world go by, or stroll past the statue to the nearby waterfront. The square often hosts events and markets, and its proximity to the old town makes it a natural starting point for exploring Ajaccio. The statue itself is a focal point, with Napoleon depicted in imperial robes, a nod to the city's pride as his birthplace.
