Les Sanguinaires Islands are a small archipelago of four islands, Grande Sanguinaire, Cornuta, Porri, and Cala d'Alga, located just off the coast of Ajaccio. Their name, meaning 'bloody,' comes from the dark red hue of the porphyry rock that forms them, especially striking at sunset. The islands are a protected nature reserve, home to seabirds and rare vegetation. The main island, Grande Sanguinaire, features a historic lighthouse built in 1844, which still guides ships today. On the nearby Pointe de la Parata, a Genoese tower from the 16th century stands guard, offering panoramic views of the Gulf of Ajaccio. Visitors can take boat tours from Ajaccio's port, often stopping for swimming or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters. The site is a favorite for photographers and nature lovers seeking tranquility just minutes from the city.
