Ouro Preto, meaning 'Black Gold,' is a beautifully preserved colonial town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Once the epicenter of the 18th-century gold rush, it now captivates visitors with its steep, cobblestone streets, ornate churches, and vibrant cultural scene. The town's Baroque and Rococo architecture, much of it designed by the renowned artist Aleijadinho, reflects the wealth and artistry of its golden age. Visitors can explore museums, former mines, and numerous churches, all set against a dramatic mountainous backdrop.
