Traunstein is a striking limestone mountain that rises steeply from the eastern shore of Lake Traunsee, reaching 1,691 meters. It is a magnet for hikers and climbers, offering several routes to the summit. The most popular trail starts from the village of Traunkirchen and involves a steep, rocky ascent with some exposed sections and fixed ropes. The effort is rewarded with a panoramic view that encompasses the lake, the Dachstein glacier, and the entire Salzkammergut region. The summit ridge is narrow, with a large iron cross marking the top. What makes Traunstein distinctive is its sheer, almost vertical face on the lake side, making it a dramatic landmark visible from afar. For less experienced hikers, the surrounding trails at the base offer gentler walks through forests and alpine meadows.

Don't miss

  • Summit panorama of Lake Traunsee and the Salzkammergut mountains
  • The challenging 'Gschirr' trail with fixed ropes for experienced hikers
  • Viewing the Traunstein from a boat on the lake for a different perspective
  • Exploring the alpine flora and possible ibex sightings on the slopes
