Opened in 1918 as the Sam S. Shubert Theatre, it was designed by architect Herbert J. Hapgood. It hosted many pre-Broadway tryouts and was renamed the Merriam Theater in 1998 after a major renovation. It is part of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts campus.
