GAED · Wikimedia Commons · CC BY-SA 3.0The Templo Mayor was the primary temple of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, dedicated to the gods Huitzilopochtli (god of war) and Tlaloc (god of rain). Discovered in 1978 during electrical excavations, the site now features the ruins of the temple's multiple layers, built over by later Aztec rulers. The on-site museum houses over 7,000 artifacts, including the famous Coyolxauhqui stone, a massive carved disk depicting the dismembered moon goddess. Visitors can walk among the excavated stone platforms and staircases, imagining the scale of the original pyramid that once dominated the sacred precinct.
