The Umeda Sky Building is one of Osaka's most striking modern landmarks, twin 40-storey towers joined at the top by the 'Floating Garden Observatory' (Kuchu Teien), a ring-shaped rooftop deck 170 metres up that appears to hover between the towers. You ascend partly via a dramatic glass escalator that crosses the open gap between the towers, then emerge onto the open-air rooftop for a 360° panorama over Osaka, the Yodo River, and out toward the mountains and bay. A luminous floor and night lighting make the evening visit especially atmospheric.

It's a bold piece of architecture and one of the best sunset-and-night viewpoints in the city. The basement holds a recreated early-20th-century Showa-era street of eateries, a fun contrast. Go toward dusk for the day-to-night transition from the open-air deck.
