Shamian Island is a tranquil, leafy enclave in Guangzhou, a small sandbank island in the Pearl River that was a foreign concession in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and today preserves a remarkable ensemble of European colonial architecture. Tree-lined avenues (closed to most traffic) are lined with restored mansions, churches, and consulates in neoclassical and Victorian styles, painted in soft pastels, with statues and gardens dotting the pedestrian boulevards. It's a complete contrast to the surrounding modern megacity, quiet, green, and atmospheric.

It's a lovely place to stroll, photograph the old buildings, and relax in a café, a peaceful break from Guangzhou's intensity. The island is small (easily walked in an hour or two), and combines well with the nearby Qingping Market and the Pearl River waterfront. Especially pleasant in the late afternoon under the trees.
