The National Museum was established in 1934 as the King George V Memorial Museum, funded by public subscription. It later merged with the Dar es Salaam Museum and was renamed after Tanzania's union in 1964. The museum's collection grew significantly with archaeological discoveries from Olduvai Gorge, including hominid fossils that reshaped human evolutionary studies.
