Gold Reef City

Gold Reef City is a large theme park and casino complex in Johannesburg, built on the site of a real, historic gold mine, giving it a unique double identity as both a thrill-ride amusement park and a window into the gold rush that created the city. The park has roller coasters and rides (including some serious thrills), but its most distinctive feature is the underground mine tour, descending into a genuine former gold mine shaft to see how miners worked, plus a gold-pouring demonstration. It blends entertainment with the heritage of the Witwatersrand gold boom.

It's a popular family destination, and the adjacent Apartheid Museum (whose ticket is sometimes combined) adds serious historical depth. Allow a full day for the rides and the mine tour. It's a fun, distinctly Johannesburg outing that connects the city's amusement and its gold-mining roots.

Gold Reef City was built around the historic Crown Mines shaft, part of the Witwatersrand gold rush that founded Johannesburg in 1886. The theme park opened in the 1980s, combining amusement rides with preserved mining heritage and a recreated old-Johannesburg streetscape.
