Tenjin Matsuri is one of Japan's three great festivals, a vibrant celebration held annually on July 24 and 25 at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. The festival honors Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship, and combines solemn Shinto rituals with exuberant street festivities. On the first day, a grand land procession (rikutōgyō) winds through the streets of Osaka, featuring portable shrines (mikoshi), costumed participants, and traditional music. The second day is the highlight: a spectacular river procession (funatōgyō) on the Okawa River, with dozens of boats carrying lanterns, drummers, and shrine priests. As night falls, a massive fireworks display lights up the sky, with over 5,000 fireworks launched from boats and the riverbanks. The atmosphere is electric, with food stalls, yukata-clad crowds, and the rhythmic beat of taiko drums. Visitors can join the millions who line the streets and riverbanks to witness this centuries-old tradition, which offers a deep immersion into Osaka's culture and community spirit.
