Namba Yasaka Shrine

Namba Yasaka Shrine is a distinctive Shinto shrine located in the Namba area of Osaka, near the bustling shopping districts. Unlike traditional shrines, its main hall is shaped like a massive lion head with an open mouth, creating a striking and memorable sight. The lion head is about 12 meters tall and 11 meters wide, with glowing eyes and a fierce expression. The shrine's origins date back to the Heian period (794-1185), but the current lion head structure was rebuilt in 1975 after being destroyed by fire. The lion head design is inspired by a legend of a giant lion that protected the area from a plague.
