The NGMA Mumbai was established in 1996 as a branch of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. The building, originally the Sir Cowasji Jahangir Public Hall, was built in 1911 and later adapted for museum use, preserving its Edwardian Baroque facade.
