Duan Bridge, also known as Broken Bridge, is one of the most iconic landmarks along Hangzhou's West Lake. Despite its name, the bridge is not broken; the name comes from a poetic image: in winter, snow accumulates on the bridge's sunny side while melting on the shaded side, creating the illusion of a broken span. The bridge is a classic Chinese stone arch bridge, elegantly curved and lined with a white balustrade. It connects Beishan Road with Solitary Hill (Gushan), offering stunning views of the lake, willow-lined shores, and distant hills. Walking across the bridge, visitors can see the famous Leifeng Pagoda on the opposite shore. Duan Bridge is deeply tied to the legend of the White Snake, a beloved Chinese folk tale, making it a romantic spot for couples. It is especially beautiful at sunrise or during light rain, when the mist softens the landscape.
