Ateneul Roman

The Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Român) is Bucharest's most beautiful building and its premier concert hall, a domed neoclassical landmark from 1888, fronted by a grand Ionic-columned portico, that serves as the home of the George Enescu Philharmonic. The exterior is striking, but the interior is the marvel: a circular concert hall ringed by a 75-metre fresco depicting key scenes of Romanian history, beneath an ornate gilded dome with superb acoustics. It's the symbol of Romanian cultural life and a source of national pride.

The best way to experience it is at a concert, immersed in the music and the painted hall, but you can also visit during the day (outside rehearsals) to admire the architecture and fresco. It anchors the elegant area near Revolution Square and the former royal palace (now the National Art Museum).

Немного истории

Built in 1888 with funds partly raised by public subscription ('Give a leu for the Athenaeum'), the Romanian Athenaeum was designed by French architect Albert Galleron as a temple of art and science. It became the home of the national philharmonic and the heart of Bucharest's cultural life.
