Spituk Monastery, also called Spituk Gompa, is a prominent Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) Buddhist monastery located about 8 km from Leh. Founded in the 11th century, it sits atop a hill overlooking the Indus River. The monastery is renowned for its large statue of Mahakala, the fierce protector deity, which is unveiled only once a year during the Gustor festival. Visitors can explore the main assembly hall adorned with thangkas and murals, and climb to the rooftop for sweeping views of the valley. The monastery also houses a collection of ancient manuscripts and weapons.
