Heroes' Square (Budapest)

A Praça dos Heróis (Hősök tere) é um dos marcos mais icônicos de Budapeste, uma vasta praça aberta no final da Avenida Andrássy. O ponto central é o Monumento do Milênio, uma coluna imponente encimada pelo Arcanjo Gabriel, ladeada por colunatas com estátuas de reis húngaros e heróis nacionais. Os visitantes podem admirar o intrincado trabalho em pedra e o simbolismo, incluindo o Túmulo do Soldado Desconhecido. Getting there

• The square hosts the Museum of Fine Arts on the left and the Palace of Art on the right.
• It lies at the outbound end of Andrássy Avenue, next to City Park.
• The Memorial Stone of Heroes is fenced off and only opened for foreign dignitaries and official ceremonies.
• An artesian well beneath the cenotaph, drilled in 1878, produces 831 liters of hot water per minute at 74°C.

Um pouco de história

Construction of the Millennium Monument started in 1896 to mark the thousand-year anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin and the founding of the Hungarian state in 896. The square was named in 1900, and the monument was largely completed by 1906. Originally, statues of Habsburg rulers occupied five spaces on the left colonnade, but these were replaced after World War II damage. On 16 June 1989, a crowd of 250,000 gathered here for the reburial of executed leader Imre Nagy.
